Heat Embossing with Cover Plate Dies
Hello! I'm using one of my favorite techniques today - embossing with dies! I love the fun look and I especially love embossing with cover dies! I'll be using products from the new Open Hearts collection from LDRS Creative!
You can do this technique with any die, but today I chose to use the With All My Heart cover plate die from LDRS Creative. I have found that this technique works best with a heavy weight cardstock or even watercolor cardstock.
I used heavy 110lb cardstock and since I planned to heat emboss I treated the cardstock with my anti-static powder pouch. I made little "handles" on my With All My Heart cover plate die by adding some low tack tape to the back so that I could easily pick up the die. I very very very lightly tapped the Watermark Emboss ink pad onto the With All My Heart cover plate die and placed the die onto my cardstock. Without shifting the die I ran it through my die cutting machine and then carefully added gold embossing powder over the die cut panel.
I had barely touched the Watermark Emboss ink to the With All My Heart cover plate die, so I didn't really get the coverage I was hoping for - but that's okay! It looks distressed and perfect to go with the Heart Wreath stamp set! I stamped and colored the main wreath image, lock, and key with Raven Hybrid ink from the Heart Wreath stamp set and die cut them with the coordinating dies. I stamped and gold heat embossed a sentiment from the Heart Wreath stamp set onto vellum and mounted it behind the heart wreath image and popped it up with foam tape onto the heat embossed background.
I decided to try this technique again and this time I really pressed the Watermark Emboss ink pad onto the With All My Heart cover plate die. And this time I may have pressed a bit too hard - oh well! My idea was to only have embossing ink on the "flower petal" shapes, but I got ink in the middle areas as well. You could definitely use a dry paint brush and brush away the excess powder, but I kind of like the "halo" look and all that gold just makes me happy! I stamped some images from the Friends stamp set with Raven Hybrid ink and die cut them with the coordinating Friends dies and added them to the front of my card along with a heat embossed sentiment.
I hope this inspires you to take another look at your dies and use them with heat embossing! Or even just press regular colored inks into cardstock! See you soon!
